Someone must swerve this gawdawful thread back in the proper direction.

Actually danvolker it does take a study to find out which fins are faster, more efficient, more powerful, faster. Just because you feel comfortable in your fins does not make them the ones to buy. I do agree with dive what you like though. Having a little "scientific" knowledge is not a bad thing. I feel faster in my 1965 rocket fins; but, I am actually faster in my splits. Yes, you should demo any equipment before you buy.

There is virtually no way we will ever get a good study...without exception, every single Magazine study has been pitiful, and there is no funding that could cover a non-profit to even come close to a project like this.

Again...different leverage with different leg dimensions ( upper leg length, lower leg length, length of achilles tendon, foot length, pelvic dimensions and hip muscle leverage potential....strength to drag ratio of body mass, and on and on.

Then, there is the who neuromuscular issue, where some people would be able to handle some coordinations that other could not...some, due to training in cycling or other sports, could do some motions and coordinations that others without this could not do...
The idea of an objective fin test is really absurd, when you think about how complicated it really is....
Now you "could" do an objective Fin test for a known group of people, if you could measure all the variables in each....it would have to be a very small group of people, because there are so many variables for each one--making the project for each individual, a huge one.....and this could never have usefullness, except to the individuals that were extremely similar in all ways, to the test subject in question.....
Again, the DEMO fixes all of this.
Each individual , gets to see how the fin works with their skill level and biomechanics....add a good instructor, to help the diver in a DEMO make the correct fin movement to feel the desired effect, and you have something that could be done for every diver interested in getting more optimal control...or efficiency, or safety margin, etc.

Wow, someone hates them some splits! I learned on and dove jets for years, so I have demo'd them so to speak. Oh and had some old Mares HUGE flipper photog fins, really hated those. Felt like I had propellers on my feet.

My only dog in this fight is: DONT LET ANYONE TELL YOU A CERTAIN FIN DOESN'T WORK FOR COZUMEL.

They all work, it just comes down to personal preference. If you dive splits you will not drown OR die.

Theres tons of ppl who dive full fins, free dive fins, splits, those funky hinged thingies, old ones, new ones, home made ones.

If they work for you, and you are comfortable with them, they will work in Coz!

So.... I was right when my LDS talked me into buying the slingshots when they and I were new. I win as I think they are cool and I think I am fast in them?

    Sweet!

There are various models of paddle fins, there are many models of split fins. They are not all created equal.
The materials, the design, the diver, all determine the performance.

    Try them out for yourself.

It's hidden behind waistband of his trunks. He does not want to scare those catfish away as soon as they spot him
