I'm looking for a little comment on airport to hotel transfers in Cozumel. I went with a group the last time I visited, and of course they handled all this. Now, however, I am planning an unassisted trip and I have been getting crossed signals on this subject. The trip consolidators want to sell me transfers for about $25 per person RT (!), but I seem to remember that it was a heckuva lot cheaper than that when I was there last year. Anyone have any wisdom on this? Also, I seem to remember something about not being able to get a taxi AWAY from the airport. They can drop off fares there, but not pick up. A couple of our gang walked out to the turnaround way out in front of the airport and got into a taxi out there for a ride into town. Is this silly, or is this one of those things that the insiders know about and make use of? Appreciate anything you guys can give me on this. I am going to use the Villablanca hotel, if this makes any difference. Woody

Wait till you get there, make your way thru the countless timeshare (*^&#%'s, and go to the counter and buy a $10 pass (unless they have gone up since I was there in August) that will take you to your hotel. When ready to leave, take a cab to the airport.

You can walk to the roundabout outside the airport and get a cab. Taxi's to not have the concession to take visitor's from the airport. They can only drop off.

I'd say it depends on how much luggage you've got. I did the $10 pass last time - it's cheaper than the $25 transfer you describe, but you get in the van and then wait until it fills up to leave. Even though I was the second to last passenger, this took almost 1/2 hour. Then, depending on where you're staying, you drive all over town dropping off the passengers. If your hotel is south of town, you'll be one of the last off the van, and the trip could take 45 minutes or more. If you bring carryon, or wheeled luggage, I'd definitely walk out to the turnaround and get a cab - quicker, more room, and probably not more than the $10 for the van ride.

Have great time - Coz is fabulous!

Or not. I always take the shuttle, and it's never been a prob. If your hotel is south of town, then you'll be on a different shuttle from the in-town bound folks. Last trip, we landed at 11:30 am (Continental from Houston), and we were at the hotel (Caribe Blu) in less than an hour, and that's for deplaning, immigration, baggage claim, customs, and the shuttle combined. In a taxi, we might have got there 10 or 15 minutes sooner, but so what? The last thing I'm in on Cozumel is a hurry.

It's about a 5 minute walk to the front of the airport, where we caught a cab to the FA. $10 total for two people. We were already poolside when we recognized a few passengers on our flight still checking in.

Gordon was right, they split people up on the vans based on where they are staying.

$10 each way is about right for Villa Blanca. The price of the shuttle depends on where you are staying.

If you decide to walk off airport property to catch a cab, be prepared to wait for awhile, especially if several others have the same idea. Sometimes you get lucky and one comes by right away.

It doesn't take them that long to load up the vans considering there is a 12 person max in them.

A tip and warning about the time share sharks:

When you come through the double glass doors after clearing customs, there will be men/women in dark suits with white shirts and/or uniforms that say "Tourist Advisory." They will ask you where you are staying and then they will direct you to a table where they will attempt to get you to commit to attend a "45 minute" presentation. This presentation is a time share pitch and will take more like two to three hours in some cases. They will offer you all kinds of "freebies" like rental cars, Tulum tours, etc. Keep in mind that nothing is free and that everything has a catch.

Unless you really are interested in viewing timeshare opportunities in Cozumel, walk past them, tell them no thanks and go straight to the shuttle window yourself and buy your ticket. The shuttle bus ticket window is clearly marked and easy to find.

If you are renting a car, Avis and Executive have desks right in the lobby as well.

If you are on a charter with Apple or Funjet, etc. the representatives will be there to meet you at the airport and to escort you to your shuttle if transfers are included in your package. They will be holding up a sign that says Apple Vacation, Funjet, or whatever...most of them are also in uniforms.

Have fun!

What's your hurry? Were you racing with those people? When I go, I'm there for two weeks; a few mins one way or the other isn't anything. Also, I am usually with three women; traveling light just isn't in the vocabulary. Schlepping all that equipaje 100 yards out to the front gate sounds a lot like work to me, and I'm on vacation. Another thing - my sister (uncharacteristically traveling light) walked out there once when she joined us there and had to wait 20 mins for an empty cab to come by. The shuttle she would have been on passed her standing there on the curb.

Anyway, I enjoy the shuttle ride. You're crammed in with other folks who are there for the same reason. Everybody's in such a great mood, and we share info and pointers en route. Where are you staying? Who are you diving with? How long are ya here for? That's Chedraui, buy your beer there. Look at that water!...

I'm ready to go now.... ;^)

GG, we flew from Vancouver to Vegas (3 hr wait), Vegas to Houston (2.5 hr wait), then Houston to Cozumel. Total time 14 hours, not including the time to check in and the time to clear customs. So I hope you can understand our hurry to get to the hotel asap. A little 5 minute walk is a small price to pay for a quicker, more comfortable ride at half the cost.

Next time we go to Coz, direct flights for sure!!!!

We were there in Sept. and just went to the "loading area" where all the shuttles are and found a guy, actually he found us, but he got us on one of the shuttles, it was $20 for the both of us to La Ceiba. It was no hassle at all.
I think the fares are set by the government and it's $10 per person, no matter where you are staying. funjet charges $20 for a round trip transfer per person, so that's what makes me think the fares are set.
yes, it's true that the taxi's can't pick up at the airport terminal, governmental rules. you can if you feel like walking in the heat, or possibly rain, with all your luggage to the airport entrance and pick one up at the turn-a-bout there in front of the airport, but depending on where you are staying it may not be any cheaper or maybe even higher, the taxi fares are also set by the government and if your staying south of town, I'm sure it will be more than $10.
