I went out in my boat to try to snorkel a bit on the Whiskey Wreck probably a month ago. Though I've dove in the Gulf Shores area off and on through the years, this was my first time to try to find the Whiskey Wreck. I was hoping to go back and dive it some time before the summer is out. All I located in front of Bahama Bob's was about a 10-15 feet long section of perhaps a gunwale with 1 foot or so of relief. There was another shorter section with similar relief. Am I in the right spot and the bar just has it covered now or am I missing it altogether? Thanks.
That's the spot. I've seen it (within the last year) uncovered enough to do some swim-unders, and in 2006, the rudder was partially exposed. Hopefully the Red-flag conditions will wash out the sand enough for a dive this weekend.
Thats it, but there are serveral sections outside of the main bulk of the wreck that you may have spotted. Without someone who is familiar with the wreck ID'n which portion you were on its hard to say what the current conditions are like...
Thanks for the info. Paul, if you are able to make it out there today and dive (I heard the seas were picking up a bit) I hope you'll give a report. I hope to get back down there to it in the next couple weeks and try to dive it. Maybe even continue my fruitless search for the paddlewheeler (miami?) .
Paul we should try and dive it next weekend, if the surf has calmed down. Tropical storm debbie may uncover some more of it like the last one did last year.
I'm down with scoutin' the whiskey next weekend!! Maybe the storm will uncover it like we saw back in September.
Hi Carl!
If you're talking about this coming weekend, I'd be in. I finally have Hayes all geared up but we haven't gotten a chance to get out yet. The Whiskey would be a good first dive for him. Let me know what day/time you're thinking.
