My girlfriend's son is going to attend Louisiana Lafayette for grad school. We are considering getting him a new wetsuit. What thickness is the norm in that area?

Anything from skins to a 5 mil full suit(with hood & gloves)-----depends on where he'll be diving & what time of year......

Louisiana diving is hard. You'll need to go 40-50 miles offshore to find clear water, and that's after a long drive to the boat. Most of the divers I know from Mississippi and Louisiana do the majority of their diving in Pensacola, Florida. As for wetsuits, I'd echo 85's comments. I dive a 3mm or 5mm 90% of the time, and use a drysuit in the Winter.
