I use dry gloves...it took a little bit of practice, but it is possible to stow the hose under both straps with them.

Its not the gloves, its the liners. Thick enough to have truly warm hands = not gonna pick up inner tube without a "tab". Thinner liners = cool (or numb) hands by the end of the dive and hard to stow the hose. Depends on the innertube though, some are snugger than others. The one do-dad I have not tried is Tobin's little plastic bungie clip.

FWIW Halcyon apparently has their bands custom made out of EPDM, supposed to be more durable than the butyl.
