Hopefully an instructor can chime in.
When determining the depth at which to start the 3m/min ascent, you use 50% of average depth, is that correct?

Or do you use max depth?

Thank you.

From the Fundies book:

  1. Deep Stops
The practice of doing deep stops comes from the concept that bubble growth is minimized through slowing down the ascent rate at an intermediate
depth. For recreational divers this prescribes:
    • Making a first pause/stop at 65% of max ATA (or at 50% of max depth in m, which is a bit less precise, yet sufficient for recreational diving

Thanks. Is that from the slides? If so may I know which page it is so I can look it up?

It's from the "Beginning With the End in Mind - the Fundamentals of Recreational Diving" book, Chapter 7 page 23. There's pdf files of all the books, for easy reference.

If you've multileveled up to 60ft from 110ft then doing another min at 50 (55)ft is superfluous, most of us just skip ahead a reasonable amount. In this case we'd probably stop around 40ft (up 20ft from the top of the reef you left at 60ft for instance). Its not that precise a rule. The key is to actually ascend some so you are actually offgassing!

Ah ok thanks. We were given a different text: Fundamentals of Better Diving.
