Yes, I can see where it is intriguing, but... if you've been trapped in an elevator, you know that thought is there...

For certain, CCR diving is not for everyone, but if hubby can commit to preparing his CCR like he prepares his camera gear, (and he doesnt flood said camera gear frequently) then he would most likely be a good candidate for a 'breather. My significant other make the move to the dark side recently and dives a mini-meg, she is quite meticulous in pre dive and practices her bailout skills regularly. I still worry about her, but thats just me.
CCR is great for photography, I find that I can get much closer to critters without spooking them, the extra BT is nice too.

as others have said, rebreatherworld is a great resource to learn more, check out the "new to rebreathers" forum and feel free to ask my GF about her experience, her name on RBW is PattiMegDiver.

So are these PMs coming from rebreather divers or OC divers? If you want a rebreather diver to tell you how your hubby is going to get it, he's going to pass in his sleep in his bed 80 years from now.... provided he doesn't get kidnapped by aliens from another planet. Honestly, there are people that will tell you how you are going to die all the time. Between breathing helium, swimming with sharks and go so deep the sun don't shine, add in the car ride to and from the boat, I'm amazed every time I wake up that I'm still here.

As someone else mentioned, RBW is a very open place. Now if you want to hear more about the dangers and stupidity of diving, go to thedecostop.com.

Life isn't about worrying how you're going to die. It's about minimizing risks in life so you can worry about important things like are the Brisbane Lions going to win the championship.

And don't be afraid of the unknown. No reason you can't change your mind or his once you've learned all you can and decided that this isn't as safe as you want.

hi all... just to update that today was hubbys first try-dive on a rebreather.... and i think he is in love

i was surprised by how easy it was to set something like this up, change the sorb, calibrate and be ready for a dive.... i dont begin to understand workings but i left the session feeling much better about the thing

seeing the bailouts and getting a better understanding on the electronics also made me feel better

today was a evo... there will be other tryouts on various brands over the next 2 or 3 months but hubby was seriously excited when he came out of the water

edit: my pic not working prop so heres the link

They used to scare me to DEATH. I've never dove with one or even used one but while on a recent trip with a bunch of friends up to BC there were a couple guys in the group using Rebreathers. I ended up sitting down with one of the guys (who recently made instructor, grats Jason!) and he explained how alot of it works. It was really cool to see him disassemble it and show me how it works, including how the kitty litter works (haha).

They are very cool devices, do I think they're for me? Not really, I'm lazy and using them requires some disciplin to a degree I don't think I have -- at least not yet.

Glad to hear it. The Evo is a nice kit. That and the Meg are my 2 favorites at the moment. The Meg is going to be a much more solid unit (i.e. hitting it with a hammer probably won't damage it). The Evo has the better computer... for the moment... with its built in deco computer. Not a big issue for non deco divers. And ISC is promising a deco computer next year.

If you get to look at a Meg, Optima, KISS and Ouroboros, you've covered the main production ones. There is also a new RB out of Australia that was at DEMA this year. Can't say what type it is or how it compares but it was from Australia and that might help w/ parts and service down the road..... Evo is out of UK and Meg is out of Washington state in the US.

Forgot.... hardest part of training is to controling that smile so you're not leaking water in all the time.

thanks guys... he will be going back in a couple of weeks to dive the inspo and i was thinking maybe i should give it a go myself, only so i know what its like as i really dont have the mentality for something like this

i believe the optima will be next, hes then going to tee up a KISS and is in contact with the aussie seller of the Meg also

i must say, as hubby came out of the water yesterday he stood up and all i could hear was "that was GREAT!!!!" and i knew then we had better start saving our pennys
