    Rough it up with 40grit on a power sander - i.e very rough finish

    Wipe down with alcohol

    Prime with awlgrip 545 within an hour, sooner the better

    Finish with a dull topcoat of awlgrip or international

    Awlgrip tends to be shiny paint so probably an international epoxy hull paint would be best for you, the result will last you for years if applied correctly. The only other option for getting a good finish on this sort of gear is sending it to a professional.

    Or you could just rough up the surface and leave it in the sea for 2 weeks, it shouldn't be shiny after that!

    I forgot about Durakote. It's marketed for refinishing firearms and making them purty. There are a lot of colors too,
