Please note that the new Canadian Shipping Act is considering adopting the
UNESCO Conventions for Shipwrecks. This could mean that any Shipwreck older
than 50, 75 or 100 years (whatever they decide) would be considered a
Heritage Site and off limits to divers without special Archeolical licenses
and purpose. It also means that newly discovered Shipwrecks would be off
limits until their Heritage Value (age) could be determined.
At this point, they are in the discussion stage, but without input from the
diving public, only the Archaeologist will be heard from. Their input will
go to the UNESCO route.
