Hi All,

I'm planning for my first liveaboard (3-day) off the coast of San Diego
in mid-October. This is billed as a Lobster trip, but I'll probably be
concentrating more on getting my AOW certification dives completed.

I have a 5mm wetsuit. I'm wondering if adding a 5mm shorty with hood
will give me enough warmth for the 60ish degree waters, or if I should
consider buying (gulp) 7mm+7mm. I'd rather not spend the money on
a new wetsuit if I can get by because I imagine I'll eventually want a
drysuit if the AOW goes well and I move on to more specializations.
I also don't want to freeze my butt off doing the AOW deep dive and
feel miserably cold for 3 days either!

I'm in kind of a quandary. Looking for input.

Thanks!

Lidja

I'd just do the 5mm doubled up. We've been having unusually high water temps (high 50's to mid 60's at depth) that will hopefully hold up for you until October. Definitely put the money towards a future drysuit instead.

Sounds like you are you going to Cortez Banks?

Thanks for the reply!

We'll be on a Horizon Charter diving the southern Channel Islands.

Curious...is there an internet resource for finding water temps at depth?

It's the surface intervals after dives 2 and 3 that are gonna kill you in oct on a So. Ca. Dive boat! Warm shower and or hose down the suit helps! And personally 5mm anytime in so. Ca. Is just too little! Why not rent a 7mm for the three days, sports chalet rents for pretty cheap
