after a good chunk of a lifetime spent by the ocean I have finally made the step to open up the 3rd dimension. I have done pretty much everything you can do on the surface of water, always wanted to do the scuba thing but never got around to it. So I finally did it - on the reef of Belize.
Considering where I am in this forum I could just say "the rest is history" because you would all know how you got hooked, but that is of course not what I am here for.
Being a complete newbie apart from barely knowing how to keep breathing under water, I do of course have the usual one million questions and hopefully you can help me answering 5 or 10 of them.
I bought a camera. I read every blog there is and narrowed it down to about 5 models that suite my (beginners) needs and wishes and decided on the the one that came in the nicest colour (just kidding). I got the Panasonic GF3 as a well tested model with a good price/performance ratio. I added one of those low price MEIKON housings to it. The two should be on their way from the bay of e and soon be joined. Unfortunately most likely too late for a trip to Turkey in a couple of weeks with a chance to go on a dive.
OK QUESTION #1: How do I set this camera up for underwater photography? I have learned using a camera when they had adjustable exposure time and aperture and you needed a little light meter to set those two in a way that suited your intentions. Now these things come with a gazillion buttons to press, only to adjust time and aperture in a way that the camera takes the photo you might like. Probably some of the most over engineered technology presently available on this planet of ours.
OK so I know I have to do a white balance. I do that almost daily in the lab for completely different reasons so I know what it is, but it took me a loooong time to convince my lab camera to let go of the automatic white balance and hand over to me. How good is the automatic white balancing for underwater photography and does it continuously readjust once it is set on e.g. "shadow"?

I shall leave it at this first question, this post is already turning into half a book and who wants to read all that?!

So hello every body and hope to see some of you 60 feet under sometime.

Hey guys! New to the board here. Love scuba diving and usually go out on dives in Nassau, Bahamas.

I wanted to pick your brains and see what THIN wet suit, full body mens, all black, no or limited logos, you guys would recommend for around $100. It is for a costume which will be worn out of water which is why I would prefer a thin suit, but not something like a spandex outfit. It needs to look like it has thickness to it.

Any ideas? I know it's not fully SCUBA related but I figured you all would send me in the right direction!

Thanks!

I'm booked for the ScubaToys BlackBeard's trip (Nassau) coming up in September. Put my deposit down and booked my airfare. The plan was to fly AUS -> FLL -> NAS the day before, crash in a room at the marina for the night and then board the next day at noon.

All was well until I got an email from JetBlue saying the schedule had been changed. Just one problem... my new FLL->NAS connection departs before my AUS->FLL flight arrives. Doh! It seems they cut back the number of flights per day and can no longer make an AUS->NAS in one day.

How nice of them to simply offer my money back..... I bought at a good price and that really doesn't help.

So options are:

Stay the night in FLL and fly to NAS in the morning ( and pray nothing goes wrong )
Travel one day early and stay a night in FLL, fly to NAS and stay the night then board the next morning
Cancel the whole darn thing and go somewhere else.

Any suggestions?

The Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is located about 45 miles north of San Jose del Cabo on the eastern cape of Baja. The abundant coral growth on the rocky reefs provides a safe shelter and food for countless colorful reef fishes, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. The marine boundaries are Bahia Las Barracas to the north and Bahia Los Frailes to the south, covering approximately 7,111 hectares. This nutrient rich water results in a profusion of plankton that forms the base of a vast food web of invertebrates, fishes, birds and mammals making the Sea of Cortez one of the most productive waters in the world. There is know other place in the world like this. The amount of life you will see under water you will not experience any where in the world. Not only that you can stop and surf on the way there.

Costa Azul surf break also known as “Zippers” is known for its fast waves for the more advanced surfer. Two more breaks exist close by. The Rock is best for intermediate surfers and Acapulquito beach is recommended for beginners or long boarders. Playa Acapulquito is a reef break with mostly rights. Playa Acapulquito is in front of the Cabo Surf Hotel. Playa Acapulquito is a great place to learn, just be aware that there are the occasional rocks. Since Playa Acapulquito is so easy to find, it gets crowded especially on weekends. Playa Acapulquito breaks good on summer South swells. Playa Acapulquito is the first of the Costa Azul breaks. Costa Azul is the bay that holds the best and most famous surf spots in all of Baja Sur, Playa Acapulquito, The Rock and Zippers. This area in the winter time is calm for Paddle boarders and good for kids.
Surfing Tournament at Costa Azul is June 17 to the 23. Hope to see everyone there on those dates. Las Olas A-600 . Costa Azul Surf Break. San Jose del Cabo, Baja California. Cabo San Lucas - YouTube

1) Is there a dive shop on island that fills tanks?

I will be taking my own boat so any information on sites would be helpful. I am seeing that a lot of people go to the triple rigs from DI, but I do not want to go to the west as I dive all of those rigs very regularly from Mississippi.

2) Are there rigs to the South East of DI in 60+ ft of water? Would really like to get closer to 100 ft if possible.

3) Are there any wrecks worth diving in the 15 to 20 mile range?
