I have the gorilla and I am a huge fan. I use them in a variety of conditions, including heavy currents & spots requiring long surface swims. They are robust, comfortable and make for easy finning - but the extra stiffness gives very nice acceleration. There is nothing in either the 2nd generation design or the the materials used to suggest that they will not last a very long time, but frankly, even if they were to fall apart within the year, I would replace them with another pair.
I am not sure whether this is a regionally specific thing, but if you are an instructor or DM, you can also get the Gorillas in the most lurid of oranges. With regards to bouyancy, mine are neutral in fresh and thus slightly positive in salt - but I've had no difficulty in adjusting to this despite having always used negative fins in the past.
I haven't used the slingshots, so I can't directly compare the two, but I have neither read nor heard anything that would suggest that they are any better than normal Novas (which, btw I was a bit disappointed with).
A couple of divers I know have complained that the gorillas are tiring when used on long dives that require a bit of finning, but I reckon if you have even a modicum of fitness that will not be an issue.

I have and love the 1st gen version except I found them a bit floppy so I decided to try out the Gorillas... The Gorillas are significantly stiffer and definitely feel like they have more snap in all kick styles... The biggest difference in my view is the frog kick... with the 1st gen, the frog kick was not efficient, almost not worth it... with the Gorillas that changes... Too bad they don't come in white but I got them anyway and will be taking them to Galapagos this April!
I ended up swapping out my Gorillas for a set of the regular Seawing Novas. I'm a fairly big guy (5'10 200lbs) and a strong swimmer, but I decided I wanted a fin with a little more flex. But if you like the Nova but want something stiffer, it will definitely fit the bill.
