Hollywood vs LBTS?

Been certified for about a month and a half, so haven't seen a lot of variety. All my beach dives have been at LBTS.

Noticed a flag in the water at Hollywood (Johnson St) and wondered how it is out there. Is it worth checking out or should I just stick with LBTS? Both are equal distances for me.

I love diving Hollywood and Dania Beach, I feel there is a more defined ledge and more diversity of life. I moved to South County so that I'd be close to my favorite beach dives! At one time I too was equal distance to either.

You will find more people here will tell you that LBTS is better, but I urge you to see for yourself. Since they are both equal distance you can simply split your time!

Don't overlook diving off the beach just north of Sunrise Boulevard. My kayak dive club dives off there, I was out there this morning and even after 27 years of beach diving, I still found it to be breathtaking. We were lobster scouting but I found myself just stopping and observing the beauty for a few minutes before moving on.

Bottom line: don't limit yourself to one beach, dive them all! The only thing to keep you from enjoying any Broward beach is the availability of parking.

Google Earth is your friend, start checking out the shoreline. When you find something interesting, go dive it. There's lots of interesting nooks and crannies out there.

Are there any rules against diving on Hollywood Beach? I have read on here that some places with life guards don't allow it. Is that true for Hollywood, too, or do you just go right on in the water?

Just go in the water. Was there this morning off Michigan (known as the Johnson Street dive, Rockpile). The water was choppy enough we decided to swim underwater to the rock pile instead of via surface swim, there was surge, vis wasn't very good (30 ft), and there was a moderate north current. On a scale of 1-10, my buddy gave it a 3, and still it was a good dive. Friends from out of town were estatic on the fish life and all there is to see.
What did we see? A 5 ft tarpon with a 3ft sharksucker did a drive by, butterfly fish, juvenile french and gray angels, grouper, arrowhead crabs, high hats, etc. Good dive, and one of my favorite dives.

When you tire of the rock pile, try every street north of Sheridan. I have dived the first 5-6 of them. All a little different, and all good.

Just dive before they come on duty, or after they go home for the day. Problem solved!
