My girlfriend and I will be leaving for Key Largo on the 19th (praying for good weather)and are both excited, as this is our first drive trip since OW. While all the diving is planned, I was hoping some of you could give me the scoop on NON diving activities, like the good bars/restaurants/sites to see. I read a Fodor's guide book, but had a hard time telling what was worthwhile and what wasn't. If anyone has had a great experience somewhere in the Keys (we have a rental car) please let me know. Our SI's are still in the planning phase. Thanks.

As far as restaurants:

Mrs Mac's has a great breakfast

Hobo's is good. I love the baked brie sandwich.

The FishHouse is good but over-priced and can be crowded

The Buzzard's Roost has good food and a nice atmosphere. It's a bit farther north than most "attractions" in Key Largo, but still worth the short drive.

Frank Keys Cafe is good, but a bit more dressy than other places and of course is quite spendy. The chocolate soufflee is to die for.

The Italian Fisherman has ok food, but a nice sunset view.

As far as non-diving activites:

Dolphins Plus has a nice program

There places you can rent kayaks or learn how to sail. Rick's Place used to have sailing lessons, I'm not sure if they still do.

Take a fishing charter.

Take the SunCruz Casino cruise. I've never been on this so I have no idea if it's worth it.

Club Cocnuts can be fun for dancing.

There's always Holiday Isle or Woody's in Islamorada.

Have fun!!!

I once was taken to an AMAZING bakery with these huge, dripping cinnamon buns. It was somewhere in the Islamorada/Key Largo area, I think. I usually go with Tavernier Dive Center on the Tavernier Creek. Does anyone have any idea what the name/location of the bakery might be?

Was it Dockside Bakery? It's located at MM103.2 in the same shopping center as Silent World.

Tavernier is mm 90, and I don't recall that long a drive...

Pennekamp State Park offers alot of outdoor activities including scuba, snorkeling, nature walks (wooden walk ways through the mangroves), kayaking, sunning beaches and more. Its located around MM 102.5.

The Sun Cruz casino boat is a nice diversion and not for the obvious reasons. When the boat stops out in Federal water 3 + miles off shore, the real show starts. While the boat sits stationary, the bright lights attract thousands of bait fish including ballyhoo which in turn attract hundreds of young black tip sharks. The ensuing feeding frenzy is amazing as ballyhoo leap from the water as the sharks ravage them. You can watch up close on the lower deck or get the panoramic view from the upper deck.

The best meal I've had recently in Key Largo was at the Big Fish Grille, although the Fish House is usually pretty good, but quite crowded.

Also, as mentioned earlier, Coconuts is a fun bar and Key West, the Sodom of South Florida is only 2 hours down US 1.

You went to Islamorada Bakery. Just North of World Wide Sportsman. Robert is the baker/owner. Also well known for having the best breakfast/lunch in the keys.

Also go a little further South to Robbie's and hand feed the Tarpon.
