Ok guys, I've been doing a bunch of reading about trying to dive BHB at night. I started out very excited about my upcoming trip and doing a couple night dives there. Then I do all this reading about homicide, robbery, and stolen cars, not to mention being run out by the park rangers. What's the official deal with this? Is it as bad as some have made it out to be? Also what are the actual hours of the park? I'm wondering if a night dive there is going to happen. If it can't, I'm looking for options for another easy night dive in the WPB area. Hopefully somewhere with a nice low homicide rate. Does anyone have any advice?
I've done lots of night dives at BHB and have never had a problem. However, as far as I know, it's now very difficult to dive there at night as the park is closed and the police will ticket you if you park along the bridge. So, unless you know someone who lives nearby (and you can swim from their place) or you know someone with a boat or a kayak that you could take from the marina it's difficult. Do any of you locals know anything different?
Another option for you would be Lauderdale by the Sea though it's about 45 minutes or so south of Blue Heron.
We have had several conversations with the Park Rangers since the rules have changed. Unless you go in from another location, or dive from a boat, you will not be night diving there any more. You are not allowed to be in the Park after dark unless you are launching a boat.
The Park Rangers will even stop you from getting in the water if you will more than likely still be in when the park closes. Most of the Rangers are nice about it, but some are not.
There is a small motel on the east side of the small bridge. You could check with them about getting in the water from there.
I wonder if they'll let me launch my kayak from the boat ramp? I believe it is considered a boat. Actually, if I talk to my Navy friends, they'll tell me it's a ship, because boats go underwater. So, I guess I'll refer to my kayak as my ship.
I had a nice conversation with one of the testy Park Rangers. He kind of had a chip on his shoulder, and I finally softened him up a bit. I asked him if he had any idea where I could launch my kayak from, and (after settling him down, because he thought I was saying "launch my kayak from the beach") he didn't have a clue where I could "legally" launch it from.
I might have to check with that small motel and see what the deal is. I'd love to dive from there again.
As for the murders, rapes, break-ins, etc... That's one reason why they shut the park down at sunset... they feel it keeps the trash out of the park.
I would love to be able to do night dives from BHB again. It's without a doubt... my favorite dive site. <shhh... don't tell anyone...>

In the old days I was crazy about night dives there. I had been known to come home from work, take a nap, then get up there to get in at 2:00 AM when the tide was right. We would do 2 hours then go to IHOP.

Please launch your ship. We won't know what happens till someone tries it.
