I was just wondering if anybody from FL is planning on attending this "world record breaking" event? I know my buddy and I are thinking about it. I was also trying to find out what the water temp is going to be, if anyone knows it would be great.
If you are going because you have a deep desire to be in on a potential world record go for it. But don't expect any real sort of diving during those days.
The water temps at the surface might be has high as the high 60's low 70's depending on on the weather. The bottom temps will be in the low 50's below 40' ... and then get colder from there. With the amount of divers expected I would expect some really crappy vis. <10'. Gilboa is a drysuit diving kind of place as far as I am concerned.
Gilboa (and the work the owner Mike has put into) is actually one of the best quarry locations around when there are minimal divers to muck up the place. It has great access platforms set up with multiple stairs and areas to do giant strides. There are a lot of fish and objects in the water to see. And the vis. is often 30 -50' when things are calm.
Come up and join the fun! I'll be the local Scubaboard moderator on site with Scubaboard stickers to hand out It's going to be a jam packed event like you've never seen but what a great opportunity to meet divers from all over the world...and they ARE coming from all over the world.
Like kidsdream said, the water will probably be in the 60's and the visibility will probably be ruined. A 5mm suit with a hood should be fine unless you get cold easily--I believe the dive will be about 20 minutes but the first people in will end up marinating at the surface until everyone has entered. Luckily that's where the warmest water will be. There will be fans powered by generators to help keep divers cool on the shore as they are lined up to enter the quarry. Having enough exposure protection for the water without wearing so much you pass out on the surface is going to be the challenge and Mike, the quarry owner, is using the fans to help address that.
I'd be happy to supply any information you might need!

Other then this one event is there any other diving in the area?
Northern Ohio is a limestone belt.... there are three dive options in the general vicinity....
Gilboa...
Portage...
Whitestar...
All are quarries w/ various items submerged... amenities and facilities and corresponding costs vary between the 3... Gilboa is by far the gem... Portage has more debris/cars submerged, and has a lot more accessible area, (mostly due to the deep side limitations at Gilboa...), and easy to get turned around and lost in... or at least I did... Whitestar is a county park, no camping (I think), and limited facilities, but it seemed to clear up more so than the others as it was still mostly a rocky bottom....
Gilboa and Portage have Camping... Busy weekends at Gilboa are ~100-200 people.., so targetting 1K.. ouch.. good luck.... it will be an absolute madhouse.
The Scubaboard gang up there is a great bunch of folks... Ber, Mitten, Brian, Paula, and gang will take care of you... I'm sure they'd love to hear all about my pink tank...
Check out my pics....

Thanks for the info, looks like this will be a fun event. I still think we should do it down here someplace we Florida divers could beat this record
Tim I love your pink tank, I see it almost every time I go to Fill Express I touch it and everything remember I stuck by you when you set yourself on fire on the dive boat. Lol Its all good. Are you going to this World Record event?
This event is a great kick-off for a Great Lakes wreck diving adventure. Come up and make a week of visiting the area, we can recommend charter operators for you and there's a good chance we can help you fill the boats as well
