Coming from Michigan, you will have some great dives! Most likely around 84 degrees.
Of the Florida Keys, most of us Floridians would probably put another island ahead of Key West for the quality of diving and healthiness of the reefs. But lots to see down there-- enjoy!
Don't miss the Vandenberg and try the Cayman Salvage. I like Bonsai diving, mature owner with very, very nice 6 pack boat. The boat is fast and the 1st dive is guided, they take free pics and provide a cd after dive. This op is a little bit more expensive then some but you get what you pay for. What ever you do do not I repeat do not go out with Southernmost Divers. This op is a joke. Poor boat, poor owner/opertor. Total scam.

Thanks for the info on water temps.
I've read the same thing... that Key West is not the #1 dive spot in Southern Florida. But, we're flying into Key West & not renting a car - so if I can get a day or two of local diving in - regardless of what I dive on - I think I'll be fine.

Those are the two sites I was going to try and hit - the Vandenberg & the Cayman Salvage. Thanks for the info on dive operators - I prefer to dive with recommended dive ops !
+1 for Subtropic Divers. I used them last time I was down there.
Many dive operators in Key West will run out with a captain and probably a Dive master, but typically the dive master stays topside unless hired as a guide by one of their customers. It's a little different than some areas, but it works.
ask Nick at Lost Reef dive shop if they are going to western dry rocks. it is 3 miles west of sand key and most dive boats dont go there due to time and fuel expense. the shallow reefs there are much better than the bleached white walls of sand key and eastern dry rocks.[ hurricane wilma left them quite clean]
I will be down there and have three days of diving available. Can I use that (2 days/4 dives) on the Vanderburg and another day on a different site? Or would that be overkill?
Would love to dive the Spiegle Grove but to drive up to Key Largo to arrive by 7:30'ish, that would be early!
Any suggestions? Thank you!
