as some of you have noted, i've been out of reach these last
week or so.

last saturday, i drove off the road on my bike, doing about
70 mph. my front wheel went off the road, and before i could
get it back onto pavement, it hit a bump or a rock or
something, and it violently threw the wheel to the left,
sending me over the handlebars at about 70 mph.

i was airborne for what seemed like an eternity, and then i
hit the ground, right shoulder and helmet first, bounced, hit
again with my back and my helmet, and then hit again on my
back and my helmet.

i sort of couldn't breathe, so i just laid there for a while moving
my fingers and toes, and then i moved my legs and arms, so i
knew i wasn't paralyzed. i didn't move or anything, just to make
sure i wouldn't aggravate any possible spinal injuries.

my buddy got back to me at that point, and i explained to him
(in between breaths, it hurt to breathe) that i was ok, just
winded, and that i'd be fine.

he kept me company till the ambulance arrived; they immobilized
my head and put me on the board, and took me to Shands at
Live Oak. a bunch of x-rays later, they decided i was fine,
but that i had a small fracture on my right shoulder (it's on a
sling right now, but i can type by resting my wrist on the
keyboard pad). also, i have a compressed fracture of a lower
vertebrae (L1). that's actually what hurst the most, and
standing and walking are bad, but sitting down is just plain
nasty.

here are some pics from the accident scene taken

(for those of you who know the area, this is CR 137 heading
north to Live Oak).

i followed up this past friday, and things look good. they are
both clean fractures, and all they need is time to heal. i
will be off work this next week, and then return part-time
for a week. i should then be able to work normally. i'll
be up and at them again by Christmas.

the bike, unfortunately, is totalled.

i feel good, all things considered. i also feel very lucky.

Dude....so lucky. I hung up my biker days years ago. Glad you were wearing a brain bucket.
Hang in there....

Glad to hear you are relatively OK...I'm sure you kno wit could ahve been a lot worse. Lucky you landed in all that grass!

I remember being amazed at one accident I was in (there have been 5, I think). I went down in a multi-car blaze on a section of crowded highway in Osaka on a drizzly/snow-flurry night. After all the tumbling and twisted steel settled, my only injury was a break in the smallest bone at the tip of my pinky...That has been my most serious injury so far...

I'm sure glad you're ok, Andy. I enjoy your unique way of looking at the world, as well as your intriguing use of the English language.

I think Someone was looking out for you.

All the best--

We had wondered where you had gotten to and why you werent diving lately. Sorry to hear of your accident and injuries, of course the new machine also being totalled too. I sure hope that our other mods dont get in accidents, coming in 3's with Mo2vation out with gimp leg and you and your shoulder/back, who next, what next???? Get better soon and hope to see you out there in a month or two.

Oh and we were just talking about you this weekend, David and I as well as Chuck and I, guess you answered that for us

Wishing you Good healing and better rides, Mark

Get well soon, Andy...

I guess that means we'll be graced with your presence a lot more until Christmas...witty reparte, anyone? Andy's in!!!!

Andy,

I came to the Florida section because I noticed that I haven't seen any posts from you in a while! So glad you were wearing your helmet, this is a case for wearing them if there ever was one. I was raised riding- my dad managed a motorcycle shop for a living, raced motocross in the 60's, and we always had bikes- but we ALWAYS wore our helmets.

Anyway, glad to hear you are okay, and I hope you get your bike replaced very soon. Get well, take care of your self-

Foo

Hi Andy,

As a survivor of an MVA with multiple trauma (head injury, spenectomy, lots of broken ribs, etc.) I empathize with you.

Glad you're still among the living and walking, my friend.

Please accept my best wishes for a complete and timely recovery. I hope to dive with you again soon.

All the best,
Grier
