    Akona Carry-On Roller

    Hey Guys,

I am leaving this weekend and wondered if anyone has used the Akona Carry On roller. I got one of these bags, (very nice btw) but wondered if anyone had issues checking it. The bag claims to have been made to airport checked baggage standards - though it's 23 1/2" long and I have read that some airports cut off at 22". Any experiences with the bag?

22" is the carry-on limit, technically. There are several factors that come into play. One is the size of the overhead space on the cabin in the plane. Many times, even though I choose to carry on my bags, if the overhead is too small, you need to do what is called a Gate Check, and you drop off and pick up your bag in the jetway before and after the flight. Sometimes they will let you through with a slightly larger bag, and some airlines in certain airports are more finicky than others. In short, my 30 years experience as a passenger tells me that there is not much rhyme or reason to the airlines bag check policies, especially in the climate of change we are in now. If it were, me, and I needed to carry on the bag, I would carry it on, with the expectation that at worst case, I may need to gate check it.

Remember, you can only carry on one bag of that size. The other can be a purse, backpack or laptop bag or briefcase, but not another suitcase.

Unless I am traveling for a week or more now, I always carry on my luggage. I have a backpack for my computer and a 22" wheeled suitcase for my clothes. Then I don't have to wait around for the baggage handlers. On a dive trip, unless you are shipping your gear ahead of time, this is not possible.

Thanks for the info Jim. I basically have the same set-up as you. I have a laptop back-pack and then this Akona carry on roller. I'll carry it on, if I have to gate check it that doesn't sound like too big an ordeal.
