I usually check my fins, booties, wetsuits (2), weightbelt, backplate and wing, regulator, masks (2), smb, light, backup computer, nitrox analyzer, save-a-dive kit, strobes (2), large dome port, strobe arms, batteries and chargers. That gets me to around 20 to 22 kgs, and then I add clothes and toiletries, which get it to around 27 to 29 kgs.
Camera, housing, ports, lenses, and a lot of miscellaneous camera equipment gets carried on in a bag weighing 7 to 8 kgs. Laptop, drugs, contact lenses, and an emergency change of clothes goes in my "personal bag."

We mix our gear in with "regular" luggage. Don't keep all your eggs in one basket concept. At least in my head it seems safer that way also - a bag full of gear seems a better "opportunity" than a bag with a BC and a bunch of clothes and misc items.

out of Oz and NZ every airline Ive ever used the limit is generally 20kgs certainly to SEA and Japan...it sucks...and they always weigh carry on too so 7kgs max...that sucks too
When wife & I fly to a warm dive destination, we carry regs and a mask each as well as a few heavy things like lights and spare batteries in our carry-on. All other dive gear, include a selection of neoprene for her and her favorite pillow, get packed in one checked bag each. They usually run in the 45 to 47 pound range. Sounds to me like you may be packing too much.

Business class allows you 30 kg here. If I fly coach I'll try to winnow it down to 25 kgs. The allowance is 20 kg, but they'll often let you slide up to 25 kgs. They are less forgiving on overweight carry-ons here, but they don't always weigh them. I have paid the overweight charge, which is $10 per kg. for flights in the region.
