We are planning a honeymoon in late September and early October. We were planning to visit Japan for the first part of our trip, and then find a place to scuba and relax in early October from about the 1st of October to the 10th of October.

Here's where it gets interesting. We keep seeing amazing places we could scuba in Asia, like North Sulawesi and Bali and the Maldives, among others.

The challenge is trying to find a great spot that we can reach relatively easily from Tokyo. We can't seem to find direct flights to Bali even from Tokyo. We don't have all that much time, so spending 17 hours in transit including a stopover feels like it may not be the best use of time.

So -- if we were planning a week-long trip from Tokyo that should have great scuba for intermediate divers (and preferably some nice relaxing accommodations for the above-water part suitable for honeymooners) -- where would you suggest?

South East Asia for us is the diving Mecca of the world with soooo many great destinations to choose from!!

Not sure why you cannot find flights from Tokyo To Bali as JAL has regular flights out of Narita into Denpasar Bali which is one of the most beautiful islands in the world and has some great diving around it especially up in the Tulamben area. Scuba Serraya Resort has a very nice resort close to ther with some great bungalows and villas to rent. Also from Bali you can very easily get to a liveaboard trip to Komodo or even possibly Raja Ampat which could easily be known as some of the best diving in the world.
If you decide on Bali though you should leave some time to visit the Ubud area which has some incredible scenery and is known for its artisans and there is just so many things to experience on the island.
Another easy option out of Tokyo would be the Philippines, Puerto Galera is very nice and the resorts can arrange your transports from the airport to the resort and back. we like Asian Divers which is on a more quiet beach. You could also take a direct flight into Cebu which also offers great diving and many nice resorts to choose from on some great beaches.
We strongly suggest Bali though for the combination diving and Honeymoon, hard to beat, if you have any more questions please feel free to ask :D

Or of course you could come down to Okinawa and dive there. Awesome sites, warm water, great resorts for relaxing and only a 2.5 hr flight from Tokyo- (over 10 flights a day- JAL, ANA, Skymark).

Maldives (MLE) would be a very long way from Tokyo.

Bali (DPS) should be easy to target.
Manado (MDC) is a little more complex to access from Narita, I guess. Not sure of North Sulawesi on a honeymoon either. Lembeh freak show would be a strange start... but that's just me.

I REALLY wouldn't recommend Puerto Galera for a honeymoon. I wouldn't rely on October weather either in the Philippines.

On the other hand, there's a direct flight operated by Malaysia Airlines from Tokyo direct to Kota Kinabalu (BKI). You could then hop to Tawau (45mn flight) and dive Sipadan for the time.

I second Japan-diver. You can enjoy diving in Okinawa and neighbor islands, beautiful, clear and warm water ... best time to go down.

Congratulations and welcome to Japan

Though there are not yet direct flights from Narita to Palau (via Guam) it is an easy set of sets of flights you might consider it.
