Am interested for information from anybody who has dove or has some insight with diving in and around Deli, East Timor. I will be down around there in the coming weeks for work.
I did a open search on the web was not able to find any useful information in regards to dive shops or general diving conditions and locations.
The diving here is AWESOME!! I have been to Bunaken, Indonesia and although Bunaken seemed to have more fish, the corals and small critters that hang out in them seem much more abundant here. The colorful soft corals and variety of hard corals are breathtaking! For comparison sake - I have also been diving a bit in the Caribbean - Haiti and US Virgin Islands and the biodiversity here puts them to shame.
The hotel and restaurant choices here are not as fancy and abundant as say Bali but if you come it's for the diving, right? There are some nice places, so don't worry.
Yes, East Timor had political problems in the past but that is all history. Dili is now a pleasant, quiet little town with 25+ dive sites within 45 km driving distance either East or West on the north road. We're known to go on a dawn dive before work on the weekdays. Basically, we're spoiled!
We have a club going called Timor Divers Network with about 35+ members now and have collected some information on dive operators, descriptions on dive sites, hotel and lodging information. You can also join the list serve if you like. More info at: www.timordivers.net.
