First time caller, First time listener (Note I incorrectly posted this in the Intro Forum, thanks for the heads up Headhunter & Overexposed2x). I am a relatively neophyte diver, and I will be heading to The Philippines in 2 days (woo hoo!), and as part of my trip, we will be going to Palawan, where I want to do some diving.
Anyone have suggestions on what to look out for, who they recommend, etc. while I'm there? Long story, but I will have carte blanche to any hotel while there (it's good to know people who know the President of the country)...
at this time. typhoons are starting to come in with frequency. Coron would be a good place to stay as it would be sheltered from winds that bring in waves. Small crafts (diving boats - banca and speed boats) are more often than not held at bay when a typhoon is near. But palawan should be spared from such frequency of typhoons.
I think you're already on your way--lucky guy! But I'll answer anyway, in case you logon to the internet from the Philippines.
I love the diving in Palawan. It beats the Caribbean by far, and puts Hawaii clear out of the picture.....
The coral is coming back in El Nido. I've found that even the corals were damaged, El Nido's corals are better than many places' undamaged corals. Check out Miniloc. There are a couple of upscale resorts near El Nido. Here's one:
The owner of the dive op at Coco Loco has a liveaboard you can take to Tubbataha Reefs. Virgin diving with a lot of large pelagics. They can only go a few months of the year, April-June, I think.
