...in the form of a gift certificate to your LDS.

You have BC, reg, console, weights, mask/fins/snorkel, booties & gloves. No suit, but you already know what you need and have a good idea where you'll get it.

Most of your diving is NE lakes, quarries, with an occasional chance to visit the ocean.

What piece(s) of equipment do you purchase with this $100. My first thought was light, multi-tool, and retractor or knife.

Help me spend this!

Go for the light and knife. Lights are always useful even for day dives for looking in holes and under stuff. A knife is an essential piece of safety equipment to help you get free from all of the fishing lines and other stuff you can get tangled in. If you are going to do any night dives you'll need two lights and a tank marker...

Now if you want to give me the gift certificate I could find a number of other things to buy

I mostly agree with Ty. As he said, a light will always be useful. I would, however, encourage you to get a pair of scissors, rather than a knife. It only take one hand with scissors to cut through monofilament line. Unless you are very adept, it'll take two hands to cut through same with a knife.

A gift certificate...How nice for you.

I would apply it towards actual dives. Although the one I received for Christmas, I used to help pay for my advanced class.

Actually, I did consider applying it toward AOW class through the shop (through which I did my NAUI OW and Equipment Specialist classes). Problem is they don't have any scheduled that work with my calendar. Perhaps they will in September. It seemed that all the July and August weekends on which they'd scheduled the dives (three each day, including a night dive which requires staying overnight at the quarry) fell on weekends when I was out of town, busy, or my son's 7th birthday.

I think I'll call there to see if/when they have September classes scheduled.

I got my gift certificate for Christmas. Paid for my advanced class in February. And was finally able to start the class July 31st. Of course, the 31st was my son's birthday (14th). So I worked it out to do the routine paperwork early and come in late for class.

I agree with Ty, mostly anyway. I'd spend the whole thing on a decent light.

The more I think about it, the AOW route is the way to go with this certificate.

A) I finally get the AOW training & cert that I've wanted for a year now.

B) It involves six dives over two days, which certainly qualifies as fun.

C) The certificate is good into next June, so I can keep checking with the shop, pay up front, and get in on one that works with my weird schedule -- whether it's in September or next spring.

Thanks!

If expiration date is a problem, you may want to check state law. In TX gift certificates do not expire. After all, they already have the $$$. Many places still put a date on it which I suppose motivates folks not to sit on them. I'm still looking for one I got a few years ago and lost somewhere in the house. Prices go up reducing it value and business disappear but that should be the extent of your risk.

I'd go for classes, service or gas.

Just to throw in my two cents... [or is it pennies :)]

:box: With all the monofilament [as well as other things] and the wonderous visibilty that is New England diving... I consider a cutting device mandatory equipment, with a light a _very_ close second. In low vis, a light will get your buddies attention a lot quicker than a hand signal...
