I am trying to set up a trip for the end of January beginning of February and I can't seem to find the right spot. There will be 4 of us, but my wife doesn't dive. I thought I found a nice place, Canouan, but I guess I never really looked at the prices. They are damn high!!! We were looking at a few spots, but I am trying to go somewhere new and relitively cheap. I would like the island to be safe and to have nice beaches for my wife. If there is a casino that would also be a plus. Of course I would like the diving to be great!!! I have been to Maui, Kauai, Cozumel, Jamaica, Aruba and the couple we are going with have been to Bonaire, Puerto Rico and a few that I have already been. Any suggestions on where to go?
Mike

Curacao has very good diving including shore diving, a range of places to stay, many restaurants, some sightseeing and shopping. I find it a more interesting island than either Aruba or Bonaire. There are a number of casinos on Curacao (though the places with the casinos mostly aren't the places you will want to stay based on price or diving convienience.) It's easier to get to Curacao than many places. It's not the cheapest place going, but can be reasonable overall.

Lots of people like Roatan and Utila, those can certainly be quite inexpensive places to stay and dive - though usually expensive to get to.

As far as Canouan or anyplace in the Grenadines, yes tends to be harder and more expensive to get those islands to than many places, and there's some very pricey resorts. Diving rates aren't cheap either, there's generally only one smallish dive op in a place, with no competition. But there are some less expensive places to stay if you can deal with the rest. People I've talked to liked the Mariner hotel on St. Vincent and the diving on St Vincent is great. There are cheaper places to stay in the same area, I don't know anything about them but most don't look all that great.

If you are still interested in doing the obscure Grenadine thing, there are some reasonable lodging options on Bequia. There are even apartments on the beach to rent pretty cheap. (As I recall pretty much everyplace except for Plantation House is reasonable, PH is the only place that approaches resorty.) There's a surprising number of food options considering the size of the place, due to the sailboat traffic. It's a very pleasant and interesting place with good diving. You can get there via ferry from St Vincent which is cheap. (They have an airport but I'm not sure there's scheduled service.)

I was just talking to someone about Curacao and they said the island was kind of dirty and it wasn't very safe. Then again, this person isn't all that reliable. Would ou say it is equivalent to bonaire? That island was acually my first pick and the Turks were up there too. I don't know anyone that has been there though. Out off all the places you just mentioned which has the nicest beaches? Which is the best for your money? I would like to spend around $2500 for 2 of us for about a week including the flight. If there is something cheaper, than that is even better.
Thanks,
Mike

Well if you really want cheap you could come down to South Florida. There's plenty to do for both your wife and yourself. There's a bunch of both reef and Wreck diving off of fort lauderdale and you can also go down to the keys for a bunch more diving. Last time I checked it seemed like florida was relatively safe, expect for all those crappy drivers on cell phones.

Depending on where you're flying from, you could have tickets as cheap as $150 round trip per person. But then again you won't have as much of that tropical island feel.

I will comment as a travel agent- February is not a month to look for a "cheap" holiday.Air fares are generally low until the end of January, or the first week of Feb. Any weekend will be tough to find the low fares so try to go midweek. Some destinations are reasonable- the Dominican Rep. might have an all inclusive at a decent rate; there are some very reasonably priced small hotels in Playa del Carmen;Curacao is Ok, but you would really need a car unless you stay at one of the hotels in town; Thailand would be good if you have 10 days.

I've heard people say that about Curacao too, but I think at least some of it comes from people who were only there on a cruise ship. They come right down the channel through town (cool to watch) towards the main harbor and the refinery. Not the best first impression though it's getting better. Anyway, I haven't found Curacao to be particularly dirty compared to many other Carribean islands and I've never felt unsafe there. It is certainly more built up than Bonaire, with a larger population, and a larger city with business and industry around it that is pretty un-carribean looking in parts. But that's not where you would spend most of your time. The waterfront and historical area of the city is a nice place to visit/shop/eat. Once you get out of town plenty of the island is undeveloped and remote, and looks a lot like Bonaire. (The greater development and "critical mass" does have a side benefit of generally better supplies and a greater variety of restaurants and shopping.)

Many hotels in Curacao have nice beaches, some don't have beaches at all especially if close to town. I usually stay at Habitat which is away from it all but on ironshore cliff so good diving but not a real beach - they have a small manmade beach and deck down by the water. There are many beaches you can visit. Some are free and some have facilities so charge a few guilder. Lots of pretty little deserted beaches in coves if you are into exploring. You might want to check into Sunset Waters, far away from town, AI, good deal, getting good reviews lately, nice beach, diving. (I haven't stayed there, just stopped on a boat for a little.) But I don't think you'll do the trip for $2500.

Turks, do you mean Grand Turk, or just anyplace in Turks & Caicos? There's certainly lots of people that have been there and have reported on trips on this board. I dove Gr Turk/South Caicos/Salt Cay from a liveaboard so don't know much about the land options there. Flights to Provo are often cheap but once you get there it can be pricy. But there are a few cheaper options. Without looking I think Miramar, Comfort Suites, Turtle Cove Inn would be some of the cheaper options on Provo. The luxury resorts on Grace Bay Beach will be much more, but the beach sure is nice. I'd think you can get some decent deals on Grand Turk, it's mostly small inns, but it's an extra flight.

I'm not going to attempt to figure where is cheapest or might cost under $2500 (don't even know where you're flying from, you should fill out your profile.) You just have to dig around websites and add up the numbers. Does that $2500 include all food and diving? Will be tough, especially in high season.

Took a trip with our dive shop to Curacao in October. Stayed and dove at Sunset Waters/Sunset Divers. All inclusive, so you didn't need to leave the resort. Not really fancy. Rooms a little worn. But we were there to dive and the diving was fantastic. Great house reef and short boat rides to some terrific spots. Worth looking into. Good snorkling right at the resort as well.

I just added my profile. I am in NJ. I was refering to anyplace in Turks & Caicos. The $2500 would just be the flight an hotel, but if I can include food with that then even better. I was just looking for some info on Utila and I found a bunch of diving sites, but no real info on the island itself. By the way, thanks for all your help.
Mike

The diving along the northwest is better than the diving towards the southwest (although the marine park is along the southwest that doesn't mean anything practically for the quality of the diving.) Habitat and Sunset Waters are to the west and dive there.
