One way to be sure that the TSA doesn't take anything, is to stick around while they are screening it. After they screen the checked luggage, it goes right on back to the baggage handlers. Some airports will let you lock your bags once they are done searching/xraying it. I repeat, SOME. They also put zip ties on the zippers now if they searched the bag. If you see them do that, and the same zip tie is still on the bag at your destination, then you know that your belongings were ok. If the zip tie is missing and you have items missing, then you know that it was the bag handlers. Bigger airports, like O'Hare does their TSA screening like in the basement or something. If you do curbside, that is where it goes, so you don't have the abilitiy to 'watch'. The one thing that the TSA guidelines state is do not pack anything in checked luggage that is fragile, worth stealing, etc. Always carry it on.
Just don't put a large tube of D-cell batteries, a regulator with hoses, and a wind up alarm clock on the same carry on bag. Nothing wrong with it, but you should see the eyes of the person running the x-ray machine when they see the gears in the clock, the hoses, and the solic round tubes of batteries. They couldn't figure out what it was and all gathered around to "inspect it". It was pretty funny.
(By the way... after searching the bag and realizing it was scuba gear they let me go).
The only 2 major things TSA ( AND air carriers ) have a problem with is tanks and high capacity lights. Tanks have to have the VALVES off of them, not just the regulators. And this isnt just scuba tanks or pony bottles...even paint ball tanks. Big dive lights that get really hot can be nicked for HAZMATtoo. octopus' with compass', dive computers, etc will go in carry on luggage no problem.
my trip is coming up, i do plan to carry on my regulator attached with hoses, octpus, computer, does this mean i need to remove all the attached hoses to my regulator?

Just returned from St Croix on Saturday with all my gear intact. Had no problems going down or coming back. Took everythink but tanks and weights, had flashlights with batties in them and no cause for a "look see" from TSA.
