    Question Divemaster Materials.

    Hello,

I was hoping to ask for the PADI Divemaster Crewpack (60020) for Christmas. However, how likely are they to change the materials between now and this summer (28th July is my course start date)? And, if so, would they let me train with the materials I have?

    Thanks in advance.

    H

General view is stuff won't change soon because they just made the big change in the DM course, but who knows.

Thanks, I think I'll go ahead and get it. If they do change it, I'm sure they'll give a run out period like last time!

The safe thing to do would be to ask for a gift certificate for the crewpack, then you are sure to be OK no matter what happens between now and then.

^ maybe he wants to learn over the 6 months between now and course start.

as TMH mentioned, there was a significant change last year which saw the introduction of a few new requirements, but from memory the manuals weren't that different (someone to confirm? I've only flicked through the old DM manual and I didn't think the encyclopaedia changed at all), probably the biggest change to the crew pack was the inclusion of a sticker to prove you forked out $250AUD for the crew pack and didn't borrow it off someone.

I bought my pack pre change and had no sticker but did the course post change, a sticker magically turned up on my application when the dive store submitted it.

I took my DM right at the switch over time. I was in a class where I had the old book and my classmate had the new book. It was a little confusing but it appears they have basicly the same materials with the exception that they switched around the chapters a little. My chapter 3 for example would be his chapter 5 (These are only examples as I dont really remember what the exact comparisons were) also I am under the impression that they have done away with the physics part of the Dive Master program. Despite the fact these were a little hard to get the gist of looking back they do make good war stories LOL.....

Over all the old material was in place for quiet a few years so I dont for see PADI undergoing another major revamp any time soon. What I would suggest is perhaps ask a divemaster who went through the course if he would let go of his old books for a small price and read through it and just study it. Then when you are ready for the purchase next year then purchase the new materials (You will need the new ones as you know PADI wont allow you to keep the knowledge reviews or photo copy them) DiveMaster is one of my greatest achievements in my entire life as it took me places I once only dreamed of once before. It also motivated me to learn to swim and do things I never once thought possible.

Good luck and GO FOR IT!!!!

I doubt they have done away with the physics, it's a pretty basic part of diving and DM's should know it.

aside from the fact that I am an engineer... it wasn't that difficult.

Im not sure if they have or not. As I stated I have just heard rumors that they have. I would love to hear from someone who recently took the course or perhaps an instructor who could clarify.

Basic Physics is till there, but the dive theory now, is not as in depth as before and what is required for Instructor level training. On the previous Divemaster course format there was no difference in the depth or scope of the theory topics between Divemaster and Instructor levels.
