This post is primarily aimed at San Diego City Residents, and Users of Children's Pool Beach.

Once again, the city council will vote at 2PM tomorrow, to end the unrestricted public use of children's pool.

In the light of the recent near collapse of the SD Council of Divers, the decades old voice of SD divers and clubs, we divers have lost the voice a majority of dive clubs had charged with speaking out for beach access, and shared use (with harbor seals). Statement of historical facts are on their website @ Childrens Pool . The only currently active organized voice for shared use is known as "Friends of Children's Pool", who have been speaking out cooperatively with the Council, over the last many years this conflict has existed.

A primary advocate for beach closure has been activists with the stated goal of barring public access at both the children's pool, and next the cove (end shared use with sea lions, there). As they are well funded, organized, and active politically, they have been behind attempts to close the beach to public use, and block the sadly needed restoration of disabled ocean ramp access at the pool. The pool was constructed and donated to the city in 1930, under trust that it be maintained for the children of San Diego. A few years ago activists succeeded in convincing the state legislature to amend the trust to include marine mammal use. Mayor Filner cooperated with them, and the subsequent two mayors have been silent on the subject. The city planning commission added their names to those recommending against closure over all these years late last year, after the latest city tactic to close the pool was discouraged by notification from the National Marine Fisheries (arm of NOAA) that some form of shared use is appropriate. Never the less, the city is pushing for closure tomorrow.

We divers contribute by neglect, to this sad situation. If you want to see a La Jolla Seal Sanctuary extending from children's pool to the shores, feeding in the reserve, continuing to cost taxpayers millions and polluting the area with coliform bacteria, continue to do nothing and watch the activist agenda complete. Continuing to do nothing has a cost, it will not make the situation go away.

If not, spend 3 minutes on the Friends of Children's Pool website 2/24/14 Council Hearing | Friends of the Children's Pool to join 500 other San Diegans speak out for shared use and ocean access, for us and our children. Additionally, consider attending the City Council Meeting tomorrow (City Administration Bldg, 202 C St, downtown) to speak for shared use, or cede your time to FofCP representatives. We have no other voice.
