Mid-January is usually the best time for me to sneak in a Hawaii trip due to my work schedule, but I am considering a late March/early April trip to Kona in hopes of avoiding the winter swells while catching the end of whale season. Although none of my Kona boat dives were cancelled when I was there in Jan 2015, the surge was notable. On average, how do the Kona dive conditions of late March/early April compare to mid-January?

Apologies that I can't answer your question of a comparison between January and March/April. I dove the Big Island this year in late March and didn't notice much in terms of swell. Boat diving was great and smooth. Bonus was that in between dives the boat turned into a "free" whale watching trip.
