    I can honestly say I've never given it that much thought.

    You could just pronounce the whole phrase... then you won't get any strange looks from either pronouncing the acronyms wrong or from the puzzled "what are you talking about?" look.

    It takes years of training to pronounce them correctly.
    The fact that you're paranoid does not mean that they're not out to get you.

    #2 and #6. Think about it, how do you pronounce DIY (as in: do it yourself)?

    There is only one way of pronouncing it right. All the alternatives you suggest add unnecessary failing points and should be avoided.

    If you are in doubt, take a pronunciation fundamentals course.

    I say Der. Don't know that it matters. No one I've said it too know what that is or the D. I. R. pronunciation either.
    Don't seem to say DIY. I thought they were like LOL, but YMMV.

    Well, maybe except for fun. Keep in mind, my word choice reflects only my thoughts and opinions and I don't see any reason to not have fun just because something is serious.

    I pronounce DIR as DEE EYE ARE because I like the approach and that is the way it was intended to be said.

    I pronounce GUE as "GOOEY" and do it with perhaps a very tiny bit of glee and maybe even a small portion of malice as GUE has done some bad things to DIR and how it is percieved by many divers.

    Well, it really depends.

    For example:

    DIR = Dee Eye Are
    DIR = "Dir" as in "Direct"

    Same for GUE...
    GUE = Gee Ewe Eee
    GUE = "Gooey"

    And of course, there are always exceptions:
    GUE = Goo
