Ginger was pretentious and thought she was something special. She was not particularly attractive. Stereotypical "dumb blond." Mary Ann had no pretensions. She was intelligent and truly attractive. I'm speaking of course about the show's characters, not the actresses who played them.
Gilligan, BTW, was a well-meaning, friendly, muddleheaded bumbler. He was not the jerk described by the OP in the thread from which this one was spun off.
