Just a quick post to introduce myself. I'm a kayak guide working for Descanso Beach Ocean Sports and joined this forum primarily to get some help identifying the strange creatures I've encountered kayaking around the west side of Santa Catalina island, like this strange helical ribbon like gelatinous creature that was about 2 meters long:

When Jake described it to me yesterday, I thought it might have been one of the siphonophores (Apolemia or Praya) but seeing these images, it is the oral arms of a jellyfish separated from the bell.
