We are taking our family to Isla Mujeres for Christmas. The kids are 12, 16, and 20. The 12 year old has just finished his scuba course here in Indiana, but we are trying to decide if he should do his check out dives here (in a freezing, dark gravel pit) or wait and do it on the island. We need a good dive shop as the 16 year old is very inexperienced, too.
Any recomendations?

Welcome to ScubaBoard! :happywave

You may want to try posting a question in our Mexico forum. You may get better info on Isla Mujeres there.

Also check out our Great Lakes Wrecking Crew forum to see what people are up to in your local area.

In my opinion you should do your check out dives now. You'll probably maximize the amount of fun you get out of you dive vacation if you dive as much as you can to get really comfortable with your new skills. Even if it is a bit cold! :11:

Don't forget to fill out your profile and dive info, so that we can add context to your future posts. Also, once we know where you are geographically from your profile, you may find that you'll have a whole bunch of new dive buddies to choose from locally.

Dive safe!

Christian

P.S. Due to the high volume of new posts in the Introductions and Greets forum, it's not always possible to keep up with all the new posts here. So, please help me out and send me a PM if you post anything you want me to read or repsond to in this forum.

there are some pretty bottom end dive shops out on the island, so do shop around, check their gear/boat/compressor/c-cards of dm's and instructors etc etc.....

one that has always had a better reputation than the rest is coral divers.

.

well I was there yesterday, and there are a few, mostly very small ones on the beach, but there is some good diving around there and I am sure you will get personal service and value for money.

I can't say a word about the dive shops on Isla Mujeres; the one time I was there was in my pre-scuba days. But the snorkeling on El Garrafon was great!

And since you posted this in the Intro and Greets section, I'll take the opportunity to welcome you to the board. I've had a lot of fun here; learned a lot, and even had some great laughs.

That's wonderful that your kids are taking up this fabulous sport.

Enjoy Mexico--and keep posting here!

Hi ya see told you someone would know

Welcome to the board!

Can't help you with your destination but do the checkouts at home! If the kid can handle cold and low visibility, everywhere else will be easy.

Completing your Profile with location and seperately - your Dive Info will help in future diving discussions. You can use the Quick Links menu above for this. Sizing a photo for your profile or Avatar can be a challenge; I'm a fumbling amateur, but I get the job done, if you'd like any help?

PM me if I can help you learn your way around; that is - click my username to the upper left, then follow the prompts to send me a "Personal Message."

And if you're going to be in Houston Oct 16 - for the DEMA show or any other reason, you're even invited to a SB Bar-B-Q dinner! Click here: http://scubaboard.com/t73366-swampers-bbq-update-and-current-info.html or PM me for assistance in signing up for it. Dee wanted to know sooner, but she can squeeze a few in late. I wouldn't miss this for anything! :thumb:
