Been free diving for many years in Calif, Mexico, Alaska and Costa Rica. Only excitement was at Laguna Beach, Calif when a large breaker flipped four of us in a life raft upside down; lost some equipment. At Catalina Island found an aircraft engine from a Grumman Goose that didn't quite clear the cliff just north of the Casino. Near heart attach when a large dark shape charged us off Santa Barbara; too large for sea lion, shark????? Cleared the side of the raft by four feet.

:jaws: Is there any method for preventing ear pain while deep free diving other than the pinching the nose to equalize pressue?

Welcome to SB BolderKeith! Sounds like you've had some excitement! Ear issues have been covered quite extensively here as they are very common. I'm not a medical professional but before I dive I always take a basic decongestent (sudafed 12 hour) that will not wear off during my dive. You might want to scroll down these threads for more ear info:http://www.scubaboard.com/search.php?do=process&showposts=0&query=equalizing

I'm on Marathon, halfway down the Overseas Hiway of the Florida Keys with some other SB divers. I like to log on long enough to say "Hi There" to each new member at least.

Glad you'r here, too. :thumb: Hope you enjoy the free diving forum.
