    Help with riffe 50 "

I was introduced to spearfishing last Oct with someone's little 36" wooden band gun. No idea who made it. I had less than stellar results and am not sure it is was due to the spear point but I hit several fish who got stunned only to swim away (range 6 feet) killed one only.
About 10 years ago I purchased a new riffe 50" (from shoulder to butt) mid handle composite. The spear is considerably longer. I never used it because I could not get the bands streched down to the shaft hooks. My freind who was going to take me spearfishing moved away that year.

Is this gun good for reef fishing? I am worried about hitting the reef and damaging the tip. Also how can I get the bands on? I am 6'4" and pretty strong but cannot make it happen. Thanks for any help out there! jezinaz

Getting the bands on is all about technique. I have a rife as well that uses two bands. I find that if I place the butt of the gun on my hip I can use my arm & abdominal muscles to get the bands in place. The arms start the stretch until they run out of strength, and then the abs finish it off. Also wear good gloves to keep your hands from getting pinched and banged up in the process. Practice makes perfect.

Also, regarding the reef, it happens. We’ve all shot the reef, and mangled an end. A bench grinder will restore the tip in no time.

Watch out for damaging the REEF also...not just the tip.

I have no idea, but we do have a hunters forum.

If you haven't yet, click Forums above and start going thru the list - looking for those of interest to you, especially your local dive club. Always good to try a Search before starting a new thread, tho and be careful about posting Threads & Replies without reading the Stickies at the tops of most forums. Click the link in my Sig below to PM me if I can help you around here..

You can test the tanks you breathe or - dive on hope.
    Testing is safer...

Great news for vacation divers who cannot talk themselves into buying a personal CO tank tester!

    >> Rent one for a week or longer here <<
Now let's see more CO readings in your trip reports, ok...??
