    Hello From Oceanside!!

Hey there out in cyberland. New to the boards and a newly minted Open Water Diver (And VERY irritated about it). I was first certified in 1972 at the ripe old age of 15, dove my brains out for the next 3 years while I lived on Guam then after we moved stateside I dove quite a bit in the Carribean, then here in SoCal after joining the Navy. After taking a few (OK, more like 20) years off to raise a family I re-started diving on my occasional vacations to Kona and Maui. Earlier this year I was getting ready for a trip to Kona and WTF??? Can't find my 35 year old c-card! So after the trip I tear the house apart and find it and decide I probably need an updated card (old pic is a "little" dated ) so I send everything into PADI and 3 weeks later what come in ths mail? A PADI c-card labeling me "BASIC SCUBA DIVER", what a kick in the nuts, so I look online and can find NOTHING on what this rating means. But on the 10th off to Maui I go, new card in hand. There the s**t hits the fan, I was turned away by the dive boat after they confused my cert with the new, lame "Scuba Diver" rating (after all, if a "scuba diver" can only go to 40' a "basic scuba diver" must be even more limited, of the 4 boats leaving Kehei that AM, none of the operators had a clue ). So after going back to the Grand Wailea and steaming for a while (This was a Sunday AM so PADI was closed) I headed to my favorite dive shop on the island (Maui Dreams) and Paul and Teri researched it for me and verified that my cert was fine and I should have been allowed on the boat but after discussing the situation I decided I NEVER wanted to be humiliated like that again, so open water it needed to be. Unfortunately their instructors were booked for the remainder of my trip so what's a guy to do? Well Maui Dreams ROCKS and they hooked me up with an independent instructor and we did the needed testing (only missed 2 questions, not bad for 35 years out of the classroom) and the 2 needed open water dives (EASY compared to what I went through to become a "basic scuba diver"). So here I am, now I'm thinking that maybe I'll give SoCal diving a try again, (maybe even retire the NIkonos V for something a "little" more modern) what the heck, the kids are grown now and it's Dad's turn for fun!
