But an old newbie (50s). Freshly certified, 6 hours of coldwater bottom time in my logbook, still trying to figure out buoyancy.

I'm about to start accumulating gear. Already have mask, fins, snorkel. Wouldn't mind some feedback on new vs used. The dive shop went to great efforts to dissuade us from buying used . . . but they're a dive shop with a quarter-million in inventory on the floor.

Any thoughts on what a newbie should absolutely buy new, could consider buying used?

Welcome to the board......You should talk to your instructor at your LDS. He/she can help you better knowing the type of diving you want to do. How frequent you are going to dive. Your in Ontario....allot of good diving up there. Cold, so you will need the proper exposure suits, and regs that breath well in extremely cold temps. Or are you going to travel and only dive worm? If I would give any advice at all, buy new (You are purchasing a life support system not a stereo.) from your LDS build a relationship and good things will happen.

welcome aboard
