Hi Everyone

I am both new to diving and new to scubaboard. I just got certified recently and hope that I can continue along in education and experience. I am currently a college student in Upstate New York and I live near Jamestown, NY. So far I love diving so any comments, advice, ect. about gear, diving spots, and anything else diving is very welcome. Tell me whatever you know.

Thanks,
D

Welcome to SB, Scubacard24.

Congratulations on your recent certification. We have a little SB dive group called Dive NY so if you're ever downstate and need dive buddies join one of Dive NY's trips/dives.

We have members from NY, NJ & PA, some strays from TX, VA, UT and IL. One of our upstate members is planning a St. Lawrence Dive NY weekend for the next dive season so you should definitely jump on that one.

welcome to the board. I checked out your profile and will say you dont have to go in to debt severely to enjoy diving. Check out some of the package deals many Dive shops offer and you can save a ton of money.

my advice on gear is that it is real trickey to take advice on gear since each and every diver likes to custom pick each and every piece of his or her equipment so the best advise I can give is rent gear for a while until you get the feel for what you want. :)

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the messages everyone. The Osprey Charters was great. There is nothing that I know of for SCUBA in the Jamestown area and you'd have to go to Buffalo or Erie to get to dive shops. Its good to know there is somewhere at home that I can try out. Likewise, I hope to bite the bullet here and get gear very soon and I was worried about diving at home. There is nothing for SCUBA and I didn't know if I'd have anywhere to get my tank refilled. This helps a lot. Likewise, Dive NY sounds good too. I'd definetely try to make an effort to get to the St. Lawrence dive. However, my diving will probably be limited because us college students are poor (especially if we go into debt for new gear). Trips over to the westside and Lake Erie are welcome though and if people are interested I would try to help facilitate everything. No matter, I'd still like to know whats going on. Keep the comments coming.

Join the Dive NY forum. I am on the west side of Syracuse. We do a lot of diving in the Finger Lakes too. Shouldn't be a really long drive for you. Most of the members of Dive NY are from the NY City area.

Also there is a quarry North of you in Ontario.

AS far as gear goes, look around there is a lot of good used gear around....

welcome adoard
