Quick background- I grew up doing mostly "individual" sports like skiing, climbing, etc and never really thought I was an "ocean" person as I had been to PCB, Florida and Venice Beach (I know, I know) and figured it was all the same. I finally relented and agreed to go on a cruise with my wife and in-laws last January and figured I would snorkel and confirm the fact that I hated it.
Long story short? I was instantly hooked and am going to start my scuba cert after Christmas. I found this place while daydreaming at work and have been trying to answer all my questions by searching before blowing up the forums lol.
Have a terrific time with your certification and look forward to a lifetime of unbelievable fun and adventure under the sea. Scubaboard is a great source of information on dive locations, dive equipment, and questions about dive practices and techniques. Scan the forums, but enjoy the blogs too! (including mine). I have a couple of posts directed to student divers that you may find useful.

Welcome!!! I am new to scubaboard myself. I just recently moved from Sallisaw, Oklhoma and am traveling as a contract RN. When the water warms up, you need to go check out Lake Tenkiller in Sequoyah county. Granted it's not the carribean, but for a local quick dive trip it's pretty cool. They have a dive park set up with a US Coast gaurd Helicopter, an airplane, schoolbus, some smaller boats and stuff. The deepest is the helicopter at like 60-70ft. I really enjoyed it! Good luck with your class and God Bless!

Thanks! I actually grew up spending every summer at Tenkiller and I'm fairly certain that the shop I'm getting my cert from does the OW stuff there. I'm actually pretty excited about it.
Wow!!! Thats awesome! I have friends that still live in that area and dive there a lot. We have used two different shops there to fill tanks. One is Gene's and the other is Nautical Adventures. I have had good luck with both! Good luck and Enjoy!
Don't forget about Lake Murray. Without checking an online map, I believe you are closer to it than Tenkiller or Broken Bow. When you get certified, shoot me a PM and I'll dive it with you if you are looking for a buddy, or I'll dive it with you and your buddy....either way makes no difference to me.

Take care.
Yeah, Murray is definitely easier for me to get to. I have no buddy so once I get certified, I'll definitely shoot you a PM when I get a chance to head down there. Thank you!
