    Hello from Toronto

    Hello,

My name is vincent. I am 26 year old and really new in diving. I have my open water since this summer. I did my open water in hawaii so really warm water. So now i am in toronto and i would like to do ice diving. So i realize that with only 9 dive ( 8 daylight dive, 1 night dive with Manta Ray , most impressive things i saw in my live) it's not possible. So i am looking for advise to go to this dream. ;-)

    All the best

    Vincent

There is a fairly large group of divers that dive Humber Bay every Sunday. In fact there is a dive scheduled for 11:00 a.m. this Sunday. A great chance to meet local folk who can give you lots of advice on ice diving.

Get a dry suit! you need that for summer....
I really really miss Great lake Wreck diving. Manta Ray is nothing compared to a well preserved mid 1800 wooden sailing barge. And be careful. Not too sure if you should be under the ice with only 9 warm water dives. I'm sure the Sunday locals will be able to assess that.

No matter what PADI says I personally believe a diver should have at least 100 dives under their belt before taking an ice diving course. There are just too many potential problems under the ice. If you don't have the experience dealing with issues like a free-flowing regulator, numb hands or you have difficulty multi-tasking while maintaining your position in the water column an ice dive can be a recipe for trouble.

My advice would be to dive your brains out, sort out your trim and get used to cold water diving. Then, if you still want to dive under the ice you will be prepared and will ultimately enjoy it more.

Maybe we'll see you next Sunday (no ice on Humber Bay!!!).
