I'm going to be in Koh Samui Thailand for just 1 day from 8am-5pm (coming from a cruise ship). The dive companies I've contacted have said that a private charter is the only option, but the prices are too expensive ($900 USD+). Does anyone know of less expensive options? One company offered just a beach dive but said the visibility is poor.

Hi Lila,

Yes the visibility does tend to be poor around Koh Samui but there are still some fantastic things to see if you don't mind looking a little closer! Octopus, pipe fish, sea horse, saddleback anemone fish, boxfish, puffer fish, copperband butterfly fish and there is a huge turtle that patrols Chaweng Reef.

The schedule is tight but a day trip to Koh Tao can be done. Prices start from 4,000 Baht (about $130 US) for 2 dives by speed boat, the boats leave at 8:30-9am and will return you to Ko Samui 3pm-4pm. Transfers are included and it roughly takes 45mins to or from Nathon where the cruise ships usually moor up.

Not to plug the company I work for but you can use it as a starting point: http://www.inseaspeedboat.com. Im sure there are some other companies who leave a little later than 8am.

Best regards,
Steve

Lila--First of all, let me say:
Welcome to Scuba Board! We're glad to have you in the community, and we hope you'll let us know how your diving day turns out.

In addition to Steve's suggestion above, I would recommend contacting Limbo here on ScubaBoard. He has a dive center on Samui and knows everything there is to know about options from there.

I would suggest that you contact Peter at The Dive Acadamy (http://www.thediveacadamysamui.com).We dove Chaweng Reef earlier this month, and they picked us up, had first class gear for us to use, and we did a dive with a great divemaster (Tom) on the reef. Although viz is not great, you go slow and have a nice, relaxed dive and see small critters. First time to see a certain kind of white nudi for me.

A really good operation and when we come back to Samui and have more time, I'll use them again.

I will add that my wife left her torch behind, and Peter found it and sent it to use via EMS in Bangkok! Absolutely great service. h

Chewang Beach is divable. Go early in the morning before all the jet skis and boaters are buzzing around. I found the 20-30ft viz acceptable.
