Hi Nick, just looking back through the posts and saw you'd had no replies, so a belated hello from the Isle of Man. (I would say "welcome" but you beat me up here by a month ;-)
Sounds like our experience is pretty similar - I did my deep dive & drift specialties in Sharm last April, and finished my AOW in the Irish Sea shortly afterwards. I know which one I prefer!

While you are in France you might see if you can find a BSAC club. I have done both PADI and BSAC and it has been great.
