I have recently acquired a large sailboat and need to clean the bottom regularly. I have been looking into hookah systems and became interested in the Thomas 100 compressor. The Thomas company said they were no longer made, but recommended the Thomas 1020 (3/4 hp tankless). Thomas said I could get it from Grainger, so I went ahead and set up an account but just found out they want $900 for a thomas 1020!!!

That's a lot of money for me. Does anyone know if the 0.90 hp Speed-air compressor (Grainger's brand, I guess) would do? It's oil-less, tankless. It only costs about $150!!

What's your life worth? Do you really want to be breathing unfiltered air out of an oiless compressor? Sounds foolish to me. But what do I know.

It is a common misconception that hookah compressors are somehow different than other compressors. They are not. Every commercially available, recreational-level hookah rig is based on a compressor that was designed for another purpose. It is true that these hookahs use oil-less compressors, but these are again, very common and not specifically designed for hookahs. Further, the large diesel compressors typically used in commercial hard hat dive operations are not oil-less, but use a special oil that is not harmful when used in surface supplied air equipment.

Here is a good thread on hookahs:
