I wanted to send kudos to a distinguished hyperbaric medical doctor and fellow co-worker of Divers Alert Network (DAN). I just learned that Dr. Dario Gomez (DAN Medical Liaison in Cozumel) was awarded the “Young Scientist / Medical Doctor Award” at the UHMS Awards Banquet this past Saturday night (5 June). Please join me in offering our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Gomez. His contribution to the DAN mission, promotion of safety in diving, and providing the highest quality health care to his patients makes him highly qualified for this award. It’s wonderful that he has received this recognition from his peers. If ever in need of diving medical advice while in Cozumel or any part of the Riviera Maya, he's a great resource. Great job Dr. Dario!!!
When a DAN member goes to either of the 2 private chambers on the island that treat recreational divers, he will likely just show up. The staff at both chambers currently has a protocol to call Dr. Gomez if a DAN member comes in for treatment. However, he doesn’t work for either chamber (because that would be a conflict of interest). He works for DAN, and he also works for a chamber at the General Hospital that does hyperbaric oxygen treatments to help patients dealing with wound care, and the occasional fisherman or commercial diver working on the dock who needs treatment. The General Hospital chamber does not treat recreational divers though. If you have a dive medical question for Dr. Gomez, you can call him on his local cell phone. If you dial it from another local cell phone it: 987-111.9299. If calling it from the US, it’s +52.1.987.111.9299. When calling from a local land line it’s 044.987.111.9299.
