I'm staying Hilton Curacao, Week of April 27th and looking for diving options. It will be our first time to Curacao. We've dove for years in Bonaire and want to give Curacao a try. Looking for info on Dive operation at Hilton. I haven't found any info on web on rates for diving, tank rentals, if rent Nitrox, sites they dive, etc,.

We will not have a car.

Also, anyone aware of any SSI operators on Curacao? Will need OW for 14 year old Son.

Can yours son spare 3 days for a full PADI OW certification? Most dive shops are PADI on the island.
Or Aquatics something near Pennichuck Square or Divers Den in Manchester could give him the classroom part and then he could just do his open water dives here.

That is plan. To have him spend time there getting OW cert. Do eLearning here so he won't have to study down there and do the pool, Open water dives. Aquatic Specialties is SSI, not PADI.
Really interested in finding out what can about the operation at Hilton. Who is dive operator out of there? Or operator out of Marriott next door.

They're the same. Ocean Encounters just moved out at the Hilton and Caribbean Sea Sports is moving in. Or already has. They're the on-site operator at the Marriott also. http://www.hiltoncuracaoresort.com/hotel-information/scuba-diving/

Experience the thrill of diving in Curaçao with our on-site diving program, PADI Five Star Gold Palm Diving Center. We offer a daily 2-Tank morning boat dives and 1-Tank afternoon dive in combination with snorkeling. Daily scuba training and Discover scuba classes.

Beginner and veteran divers will enjoy a variety of diving sites around the island with expert guidance and top-of-the-line equipment. All divers are required to show certification of an internationally recognized recreational diving agency. Solo diving and dive gloves are not permitted. At Caribbean Sea Sports at Hilton Curacao, safe diving practices and environmental conservation during all dives is required.

The Dive Bus will pick you up there also for escorted shore dives since you mentioned not having a car. http://www.the-dive-bus.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=437&Itemid=215

divessi.com lists two locations. http://www.divessi.com/dc_locator

One is the military base in Willemstad - Dutch Military only.

The other is Downtown Diving at the Tugboat site - about a 15min. drive from the Hilton. Unless they're a different operator nearby I am almost positive they shut down operations earlier this year also. In spite of their website still being online. http://www.downtowndiving.info/ Another post here indicated that it was now necessary to take tanks to dive the Tugboat since that happened. It's also a relatively easy shore entry - not boat only as they indicate on their website.

Are you married to the idea of staying at the Hilton? I don't mean for dive OP, I mean staying at that hotel vs some other hotel...

Yes. Because using Hilton Honors points so our stay is free.

Thank you so much. This is VERY helpful. I'm checking out dive bus but require a dive master for transportation. Looking at other options including on resort operator. Really appreciate your forwarding info on Caribbean Sea Sports. I wrote to Hilton and have not heard back.

Couple of points.
#1. You should consider using the dive bus folks - esp. since you won't have a car.
#2. Be prepared for the Hilton being the very worst Hilton property you have ever stayed at.

I have also stayed there for free on points and probably would not stay there again even if it were free. Never say never - but just about never!

#3. Food costs will be more than you expect. Check out dining at the Marriott as well as at the Hilton. When we were last there their currency was tied to the Euro - not to the USD and the conversion rate was unfavorable. However, conversions rates change constantly. YMMV

Thanks for heads up. I wasn't expecting much given it's only 30,000 points/night. Doing this on the cheap. United miles through Aruba, connecting on Insel Air. Shame not enough volume for United to go direct anymore. I say can't be any worse than Plaza Resort Bonaire. It sounds same, $$$ meals, rooms in need of upgrading. For us, it's about the diving and we don't spend much time in rooms.

Open to ideas on alternative dining options.. Walking distance.. Will likely have meals in town in evenings and will have to cab to town.

Set your expectations even lower in order to avoid disappointment. The Curaçao Hilton is a dump; Plaza Resort in Bonaire is a Four Seasons, by contrast. Have been to Curacao many times, and I gladly pay out of pocket to stay at the Marriott rather than stay at the Hilton for free on points. That said, if you're just using it as a place to sleep and bathe you'll probably be OK. Note that there is no beach, unless you count trucked-in sand in front of the little bit of a bay there.

There's not much within walking distance of the Hilton, Pirate Bay (formerly Hook's Hut) is about it, other than the Marriott. I've used Caribbean Sea Sport (CSS) at the Marriott on three different trips and they are fine. If they're handling the dive op at the Hilton they'll be fine.

Personally, I would rent a car - for at least a few days - to get out and about. You're looking at paying $45-$50 roundtrip for taxis to/from Willemstad which I'm assuming is the "in town" to which you're referring. Cheaper to rent a car when you think about it.

There's lots of great beaches, many/most of which have an on-site dive op if you want to rent tanks there. CSS has a pretty good deal on unlimited tanks for the week, so getting them at your hotel and driving around as in Bonaire is an option. I would make it a point (or punt, as the case may be) to get up to Westpunt for a day. Go to All West diving right at Playa Kalki, do a few shore dives in the morning right off the dock, have a burger for lunch at restaurant up the steps from the beach, then do an afternoon boat dive to Watamula or Mushroom Forest. When you get back from that have a few beers and enjoy the beach. Be sure to schedule this excursion on a day when Sol Food is open so you have dinner with Sunshine (above poster) and David at their great restaurant.

Do note that the geography/topography of Curaçao is very different than Bonaire, and shore diving/driving requires a bit more understanding of where you want to go before you set out. While the diving itself is very similar to Bonaire, the island's logistic/traffic situating is very different. If you look at a typical, no-detail "dive site map" of Curacao you'd think "wow, look how easy!"

But in reality, Curacao is much more irregularly shaped than Bonaire (certainly far more so than the map above) with many coves, hills, etc. Accordingly, unlike Bonaire, there is not a single "main road" that runs along the coast.

Many people get to Curacao and are surprised to discover that driving from one divesite to another - though perhaps only a 1/2 mile apart - requires traversing back out the opposite direction, up to the main road, heading back towards the next site, down a series of poorly marked roads and turn-offs, getting to the wrong beach, heading back to the main road, and eventually finding your way to the next site.

As far as I'm concerned, it's no problem as long as you know that going in.

Enjoy!

Pirate Bay is maybe a 5min.walk from the Hilton. Pirate Bay Curacao | Beach Club Curacao | Hooks Hut Curacao (former) Exit the property on the north side and walk left on the road going left. It's all of a 1/10 of a mile from there.

We ate at the Marriott beachfront restaurant once. Normal resort prices, normal resort food.
I also ate one night at Aqua - the Hilton's outdoor restaurant. It was average frankly.

Also you're only about 2 miles from downtown. Get a cab and have him drive east along the main road- Zwikenstraat (sp) in Piscadera Bay. There's a rotary that funnels traffic north just over 2 miles away. Right there - about a block east towards the harbor downtown is one side of the Queen Emma Swinging Bridge. The cruise port is just past there and there's shops/restaurants on both sides of the harbor. Here's a nicer one: Home

Or ask to be taken to the Rif Fort area. From there you can't miss it, it's lit up at night with big blue arches. This is it from the east side: Curaçao Bovenwater | in2h2o.nl
