The Japanese didn't catch it - they "captured" it with a camera on September 30th, 2004.

"Working about 600 miles south of Tokyo off the Bonin Islands, known in Japan as the Ogasawara Islands, [Tsunemi Kubodera, Kyoichi Mori and their team] photographed the creature with a robotic camera at a depth of 3,000 feet. During a struggle lasting more than four hours, the animal, about 26 feet long, took the proffered bait and eventually broke free, leaving behind an 18-foot length of tentacle."

Otoh, paralarval giant squids have been caught before in 2001 (by Steve O’Shea) - unfortunately they died in a holding tank before they could be transferred to a larger tank on land.

It wasn't actually caught (unless you count the couple of seconds that it wa hung up on a hook that was on the line), it was videotaped at 900 feet down or so. There's a thread around here somewhere that talks about it.

Actually, it was caught on the line for 4 hours and 13 minutes and had to rip its own tentacle off to escape. The tentacle was still "functioning" when it was hauled onto the boat.

See video and photo of tentacle here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4288772.stm

DavidPT40:
Any estimates of the number of giant squid in the oceans?
Ha ha, we don't have a clue. More than 5, conceivably.

do you consider this giant? We saw this one when we we're about to dive in Anilao, Batangas, Philippines :D Picture courtesy of Chip
