Not the first live one captured on film. About two years too late for that. Those folks didn't intend to catch one, only film him. In the process, the squid got caught in the camera rig and they did wind up bringing up about a 16 ft section of arm that broke off. After peer review, the footage and story was released on September 28, 2005.

The article didn't seem to be written by someone who was well informed, but I believe this is just the first one captured alive, and it died after they had it at the surface. The first one filmed alive was never brought up from depth, except for the arm (which, btw, was still alive and twitching at the surface).

Wow! That is just scary!!

They killed a little baby... heck, it was only 24 ft, right? They get up to 60 ft. I remember the announcement about the first one filmed alive at depth.

Anyone know where to buy tempura mix in 55 gallon drums?

Very cool! The best part about the time I spent comm fishing was all the cool crittersthat would come up from the depths. The deeper teh cooler!
