Hi all
Greetings from Paradise. Mini season has ended the stream
of traffic and boats has headed north again, and August is
upon us. Does anyone have an information on the Coral Spawn
that happens after the Full moon in August. I have signed
up yearly for the night dive and have yet to see this amazing sight. I would dive pretty much anywhere in the Keys
But I don't want to be disappointed.

I just came back from a weekend aboard the MV Spree in the Gulf. they dive the Texas Flower Gardens, Stetson Banks, deep water oil rigs etc...
They have atrip in August after the full moon. The corals usually spawn approximately 8 days thereafter. the trips are nicely priced (about $350) and the cost includes food. Nitrox fills are extra.
The captain is a guy named Frank and he runs a great operation. I'd be down there next month except I'm going to Cozumel in October. Check them out at ww.rinnboats.com

Thanks KT

I was looking for something a little closer to home .
lucky you Cozumel is my absolute favorite. Horseshoe
Reef at Palankar was the reef i was lucky enough to do
my 1st certification dive - my instructor billy nell ended
the dive with a quiet look at the abyss - took my breath
away. The turtles are nesting in august they are
everywhere. If you go to the museum on main street in
san miguel, they have a program that you can join .
They have gotten the children of the island involved in
baby turtle releases out on the windward side of the island
it is a very cook thing to see - very moving!!! The little
mexican boy near me picked the little turtle out of the
bucket and kissed it's shell and said "adios amigo" .
It's a truly great idea they have there - getting the children involved will indeed make sure that the turtles
(these were green turtles) are given every chance of
survival. If i remeber correctly the man that runs the
program out of the museum's name was angel. Enjoy !!

Maybe you can help me....I would like to get some first hand recommendations for diving the Keys. A group of us are thinking about chartering a bus and going down there for 4-5 days. Its about a 30 hour drive from DFW to Miami.

Where would you dive and who would you recommend??? All of us are Dive Master or higher, some of us are wreck certified and all of us enjoy deep diving.

Any suggestions????

Keysgirl,

A couple of years ago, I dove with the people at the Biscayne National Underwater Park for the coral spawn. I thought they ran a nice operation and gave us excellent service.

Try giving them a call 305.230.1100. FYI, if I remember correctly, their hours of opearation are 8am-4pm.
