- Was certified at Scripps Ocenaography in 1967 or so -- did lots of open water diving in the North Pacific to calibrate instruments. Also did lots of diving around La Jolla to feed myself while in college and graduate school. However, the cold water North Pacific dives left an impression. Returned to diving in the early 1990's when my wife wanted to learn to dive.
