Conversation Between Nemrod and hcvanzyl

  1. Hello,

The G12 Fisheye dry lens is essentially the same unit as the UWL-04, just adapted to the dry port for the G12 et al. Therefore I doubt there is any significant improvement between the G12 with dry port version of the UWL-04 and the S95 with the wet version. Yes, the layer of water could slightly degrade the image but please understand, in neither case are we dealing with a lens specifically designed for the camera as we are with a dSLR or the old SLR or Nikonos film cameras. These are "universal" fit lenses but with that said, either will provide excellent results for us play photographers, neither will provide professional results equal to a dSLR purpose made lenses, sensor and other esoteric arguments aside.

  2. Nemrod,

You said that you would prefer a dry fit system like the Fix G12. Is the image quality of a dry system like the Fix G12 with dome significantly better than the wet Fix S95 & Fix UWL-04 lens system?

Theoretically a dry system should produce higher image quality because there is no layer of water between the housing and the accessory lens, but is it a significant difference?

The reason why I ask is because I want to buy the Canon S95 with Fix S95 housing & Fisheye UWL-04 lens, but are hesitant because the Canon S100 is on the market. You stated that the Canon S100 is not a good option because of it's 5X zoom and 24mm focus length. I suppose one way to overcome this problem is to create a 24mm compatible fisheye lens and add it to a dry system like the Fix G12, which also has a 5X zoom.

Is it worthwhile to wait for the industry to manufacture such a system because it theoretically should produce higher image quality or should I just buy the Canon S95?

    Thank you

    Hermie
